The Controversial History Of Golf

The history of golf is not entirely clear and it is certainly often debated. If you ask most people, they would tell you that golf started in the 1100s or thereabouts in Scotland, where shepherds, bored out of their wits, would shoot rocks into rabbit holes for amusement. This game was played on the site of the modern Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in Scotland.

But if you look at other parts of the world, different theories and different stories exist. According to research conducted by some Egyptian history scholars, old hieroglyphics from the time of the Pharaohs make a reference to golf. A game using sticks to knock a ball into holes was mentioned in an 11th century Chinese book and there are claims that this game was brought to Europe by the Mongols in the 12th or 13th century. And meanwhile, the Dutch supposedly started playing this game towards the end of the 1200s.

But we must all remember the beauty of golf and the fact that it is one of the world’s most underrated sports, and forget the fact that different cultures have their own version of how the game started. And meanwhile, as scholars of different world cultures, may they specialize in Egyptian, Chinese or Dutch culture, engage in their own contest of one-upmanship, they fail to realize that golf, or “goulf” as it was once spelled, is closest in form to the game played by the shepherds at St. Andrews in Scotland.

St. Andrews saw the establishment of the first permanent golf course along with the first set of written rules. It also happens to be the first golf club offering membership to paying customers. Yet another first at St. Andrews would be the practice of holding golf tournaments, which started as challenges between different Scottish cities.

It may be a bit of a surprise, though, that the course at St. Andrews wasn’t always an 18-hole course. The unique strip of land where the course was located had a lot of steep inclinations, which necessitated some workarounds. The players gradually established a customary path which in the beginning was 11 holes long.

The layout was just as unique as the 11-hole setup, starting from the clubhouse and finishing at a strip of land near the sea. However, the game itself would be one of 22 holes, as players would go around the course twice. In 1764, it was decided by the club that some of the holes were superfluous and had to be combined. Golf would then become an 18-hole game, with the newly revamped nine-hole course circled twice.

Other courses were soon established in other parts of Scotland, later spreading to England and the rest of the world. The status of the St. Andrews club established the 18 hole course as the normal length and so it has remained throughout the history of golf until modern times.
